Modeling E-Commerce Products with Blender: Step by Step Guide

Why Blender?
Blender is a completely free and open-source 3D modeling software. It offers features that compete with commercial alternatives. It has all the tools needed for e-commerce product modeling: modeling, UV mapping, texture painting, rendering, and GLB/GLTF export.
Preparing the Workspace
- Clean the scene: delete the default cube, light, and camera
- Set unit system: Scene Properties > Units > Metric, Scale: 0.01 (to work in cm)
- Add reference image: Add > Image > Reference to place the product photo in the scene
Basic Modeling Workflow
Start from Simple Geometry
Most products can be derived from basic geometric shapes. A glass starts from a cylinder, a box from a cube, a bottle from a revolved profile.
Use Subdivision Surface
Work with low polygon count and add a Subdivision Surface modifier. This smooths edges for a polished look with fewer polygons. Set subdivision to 2 for final render, 1 for viewport.
Add Detail with Loop Cuts
Use Ctrl+R shortcut to add edge loops for detail. Place edge loops close together for sharp edges.
UV Mapping
- Enter Edit Mode
- Mark seams at natural cutting points for the texture
- UV > Unwrap to unfold the UV map
- Adjust in the UV Editor
Exporting as GLB
Select File > Export > glTF 2.0 with these settings:
- Format: GLB (Binary)
- Include: Selected Objects
- Transform: +Y Up
- Mesh: Apply Modifiers enabled
- Material: Export Materials enabled
- Compression: Draco enabled (optional)
