360-Degree Product Photo or 3D Model? Make the Right Choice

Two Different Approaches
There are two fundamental ways to show a product interactively in e-commerce: 360-degree photo sequences and real 3D models. Both offer the ability to "rotate the product" but their technical foundations and experiences they deliver differ.
360-Degree Photo
Consists of product photos taken at set angle intervals (typically 24-72 frames) on a turntable. The user drags to switch between frames, creating the appearance of rotation.
Advantages
- Photo-quality realism - actual photos of the real product
- Well-known, widespread production process
- No additional software development needed
- Works across all devices and browsers
Disadvantages
- Fixed angle - horizontal rotation only, no up-down viewing
- Limited zoom - constrained by photo resolution
- No AR support
- Separate shoot needed for each variant
- File size can be high (72 photos x 500 KB = 36 MB)
3D Model
A digital three-dimensional representation of the product. Rendered in real-time with full interaction capability.
Advantages
- Fully free rotation from any angle
- Unlimited zoom
- AR support for viewing in your space
- Color and material variants on a single model
- Generally smaller file size (1-3 MB)
Disadvantages
- May not be as realistic as photos (depends on quality)
- Requires 3D modeling expertise or tools
- Dependent on GPU performance
Decision Guide
Choose 360 photo: When texture and surface detail are crucial (fabric weave, natural stone patterns). When your photo infrastructure is strong and you do not need AR.
Choose 3D model: When you want to offer AR, have many variants, want to show internal structure, and target long-term scalability.
Conclusion
The two methods are not mutually exclusive. Some companies adopt a hybrid approach, using 3D models for high-priority products and 360 photos for others.
