Shopify and 3D Support

Shopify is one of the earliest e-commerce platforms to adopt 3D content support. The platform directly supports GLB format 3D models as product media, and many themes include built-in 3D viewers.

Preparing 3D Models

Ensure your model meets these requirements before uploading to Shopify:

  • Format: GLB (GLTF Binary)
  • Maximum file size: 15 MB (but under 4 MB recommended)
  • PBR materials should be used
  • Model origin point should be at base center
  • Y-up coordinate system

Upload Steps

  1. Go to the Products section in Shopify admin
  2. Select a product or create a new one
  3. Drag your GLB file to the Media section or use "Add media"
  4. Shopify automatically recognizes the 3D model and creates a preview
  5. You can also upload a USDZ file for iOS AR

Theme Compatibility

Current Shopify themes (Dawn, Refresh, etc.) automatically display 3D models in the product gallery. Older themes may require theme code modifications.

AR Activation

AR support in Shopify is provided through the model-viewer component. In compatible themes, the AR button appears automatically when a GLB is uploaded. Android devices use Scene Viewer, iOS devices use AR Quick Look.

Performance Notes

  • 3D models can affect page load speed - optimize file size
  • Use poster images - a static image is shown while the model loads
  • Lazy loading is critical on collection pages with many 3D models

Conclusion

Shopify built-in 3D support lets you use 3D product visuals without additional apps or complex integration. Preparing and uploading your GLB file is all it takes.
